The Hangleton Band: Matthew Pollard

Born in Beverley and educated at the Universities of Huddersfield and Sussex, Matthew is a former Solo Baritone player with the National Youth Brass Band and Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. His teachers have included include Bob Childs and Geoffrey Whitham (euphonium/baritone), Philip McCann and Barrie Webb (conducting) and Prof. Martin Butler (composition). He is currently an Associate Music Tutor at the University of Sussex.

Matthew works extensively in the fields of composition and conducting. His works have been performed throughout the UK by musicians including Lontano conducted by Odaline de la Martinez (Purcell Room 2005), the COP Orchestra conducted by Roger Montgomery (Royal Academy 2001), and the Paragon Saxophone Quartet. His first opera, The Diary, was performed in 2002 by former Swingle-singer Heather Cairncross, and a revised version is due for performance in summer 2007. A new work for brass band is scheduled for performance early in 2007 by the RNCM brass band.

As a conductor, Matthew has worked mainly in the fields of contemporary and choral music. He currently holds posts with with the Rainbow Chorus and the Tacet Ensemble, with whom he has given many world premieres by composers including Alison Kay, John Alexander, John Mayer and Martin Butler. His new appointment as MD of the Hangleton Band marks a welcome return to the world of banding.


The Hangleton Youth Band: Position Vacant

There is currently a vacancy for the position of Youth Band Musical Director following the departure of Rachel Taylor from the post at the end of last year. We are keen to fill the position as quickly as possible, and if you or anyone you know would like to be considered for the post, please contact our Band Manager, Andy Taylor.

The post is currently being filled by the Senior Band MD Matthew Pollard, aided by members of the Senior Band.
